Maureen Bird

Thu 06 Jan 2022  14:56  Jessica Redfearn

Maureen Bird has died age eighty after a long period of ill health. She will be best remembered by many current ‘S&D’ players for her long term association with the Winter League and Dennis Webb, eventually taking sole control, and playing in and organising the Weston Park team in that event. However, as a player her earlier and main commitment was to the Sheffield & District Parks Association, playing for Weston Park and latterly Firth Park. She had been secretary of the Yorkshire Keep Fit Association, and in later times became well known in S Yorkshire sporting circles for being, for some thirteen years, the Executive Officer of the Sheffield and District Works and Sports Association covering, at one time, dozens of sports and games activities. She played for her company, Tarmac, in the Tennis Section of that Association. The decline of Sheffield manufacturing resulted in her having to be heavily involved in the sad ending of many of those activities.

She is survived by her husband, daughter, and son.
